Aromatherapy
can be applied in many different ways. In times of stress, however,
the most effective therapy is an aromatherapy massage. This is a wonderfully
relaxing massage that uses massage oils blended with aromatic essential
oils to great effect. Each essential oil has its own therapeutic properties
and your therapist will suggest particular oils based on information
gathered during the consultation.
It’s fascinating to note the ways in which aromatic molecules are absorbed into our bodies: through the skin and from there directly into the bloodstream; via nerve endings in the nose to the brain, evoking emotions and memories; through inhalation into the lungs and from there directly into the bloodstream. Essential oils work their magic through a surprising number of channels. There are a number of ways in which you can self-administer essential oils, for example, in a moisturiser or body lotion, a few drops in a bath or in an oil burner. But be aware that these are powerful potions and should be treated with respect, so if in doubt consult an expert.
The
benefits of massage almost go without saying, as most
of us intuitively know that a good massage is very beneficial. Your
therapist will adapt your treatment to suit your needs, for example
make it gentle or vigorous, or focus on specific parts of the body where
you may be holding tension. We all have those, shoulders and mid-back
are typical. These are some of the specific benefits:
Foot
Reflexology is a fascinating treatment, one that a lot of people
still see as simply a foot massage. It is, however, so much more than
that. Each foot has on it 7,000-7,200 nerve endings which correspond
to different areas of the body. Considerable work over time has enabled
maps of the feet to be drawn which define the areas of the feet that
need to be stimulated (using specific massage movements) to have a positive
effect on the corresponding body system. Apart from most of the benefits
mentioned for massage, regular reflexology is great for insomnia as
it has an overall balancing and calming effect. By dispelling blockages
in the nervous system it also encourages the body’s ability to
heal itself and restores energy balance.
