This is a registered charity which operates throughout the UK with separate organisations for each area. It was formed to help couples prepare for marriage and to sustain their marriage. It can also be relied upon to support you when your relationship breaks down. Marriage Care supports people in the best and worst of times in their marriages and family relationships. With over fifty years experience, it has now developed a major strength in couple counselling.
Marriage Care in England and Wales
It has 66 centres and over 400 professionally trained counsellors who are all BACP approved. They also receive in-house training and provide their services free of charge. Terry Prendergast, its Chief Executive based at the Hammersmith HQ, says that although the organisation is Christian based, it is open to anyone who needs its services. The unique aspect here is that counselling is provided free but donations are requested.
What is their philosophy?
As mentioned, there is a Christian base to the philosophy and values of Marriage Care to which the counsellors adhere. The approach is holistic which means that it concentrates on the development of the whole person. Clients are therefore able to express and explore their feelings whether they are of an emotional, intellectual, sexual or spiritual nature.
